It has since also appeared in the bimonthly newsletter of the Alliance Française. Here is the link, and the text follows: https://www.eastbayri.com/stories/meet-kari-tieger-getting-lost-in-the-passion-of-music,111894?

By Michael Khouri

What immediately impressed me during my recent sit down with singer/songwriter/keyboardist Kari Tieger was her beautiful speaking voice. Like her singing voice, it is lilting, rich in tone, rhythm and inflection. Strikingly operettic.

Her language is the Queens English - proper and cultured, but without the slightest suggestion of elitism. In fact, she can slip into street vernacular for effect whenever necessary. A joy to listen to.

Over tea at The Black Pear in Barrington, the East Providence resident spoke of her lifetime as a piano teacher, working musician, recording artist and lover of all things Français.

”I’m a bilingual singer, songwriter, keyboard player, vocalist,” said Tieger.

”I remember deciding to call myself a singer/songwriter in the early ’80s, when no one was using the term at the time.”

I asked Tieger about the origins of her love for music.

”From 4 years old I fell in love with the violin. Whenever I heard it being played, it would move me to tears, so my family believed I was meant to be a violinist,” remembers Tieger. “At 8 I was taking lessons. I had a gifted teacher who was very strict and demanding. My dad, my grandmother and my uncle, who were all musicians as well, closely observed my development.”

Tieger struggled with lessons and everyone concerned concluded that she wasn’t cut out to play the violin.

That small setback, however, wasn’t the end for her as an artist, but ironically, the beginning of her lifelong journey in music.

“I was drawn to the piano. I started to play piano at around 14. My dad knew I fell in love with it, and for my 15th birthday he showed up at the house with a U Haul and a piano. It changed my life. I still own and play that very piano to this day,” Tieger said.

Tieger’s progression on the piano was evident and speedy.

“While learning the piano, I took a few lessons with a few different teachers,” said Tieger.

”At 15 I was in my first recital. We lived in Long Island at the time. I had found a wonderful teacher there. Her name was Bets von Drasek. She taught me voice as well as piano. After a couple years of study with her, when I was 17, she said, “You are ready to teach. Here’s the book you will use. Here are two students.”

By the time Tieger was in college, she was teaching, studying and gigging.

“I was offered a job on the Port Jefferson ferry playing piano and singing once a week. “It was going well until one day a gentleman came up to me and said he was a musician, and could he play a song? Being trusting and green in the business, not knowing the rules of etiquette or protection, I said yes. He was talented and tricky. Eventually he was offered the gig. I was out.”

It was Tieger’s first foray into the callous side of the music business — a business that at times can be cut-throat and unforgiving.

”When I was still in college, I went to Boston for a visit on New Year’s Day. It was there that I met my husband. He was from Rhode Island and visiting as well. Our courtship blossomed, and before too long I went back to Rhode Island with him and we’ve been here ever since,” Tieger said.

An explosion of music

Be it coincidence, precise star alignment or simply evolution, Tieger’s move to the Ocean State seemed to have unleashed a deep well of inspired art and creativity. She has, since then, written prolifically and has amassed a voluminous body of recorded works.

In total, Tieger has recorded and released 23 CD’s including appearances on nine compilations CD’s.

I asked Tieger about her drive to write and record.

“Songwriting kind of pushed its way out of me, taking on a life of its own,” said Tieger.

“I’ve been making albums since the late ’80s, and every one of them has made itself.

“I remember when I was working on my CD, ‘Touch of Magic.’ I just wanted to record a song or two. Then more and more material came. And before I knew it, I said, ‘Oh, I’m making an album.’ ”

Many local songwriters/musicians who release independent albums do not, historically, have large sales numbers. Tieger was once asked why she made albums that she knew would be very difficult to sell commercially.

”It’s not about money. I’m driven because these songs want to be recorded. And it’s always a relief when I’ve finished recording, because even if I never perform them again, they are in a form that will last forever,” said Tieger.

A love for the French

Among her works, Tieger — a self-confessed Francophile — has recorded 3 CD’s in French, ‘My Zazen,’ a bilingual introduction to meditation, En français, s'il te plaît’ and ‘Nos Mots’.

Tieger first heard the beauty of French music as a child.

”I was listening to the radio with my mom, and an Edith Piaf song started to play. My mom, who took French in high school and had a friend who spoke it, spoke some French and I asked her what the singer was saying, whats going on in the song? And Mom translated for me. I fell in love with French then and it is still today one of my passions.”

Tieger, who is not of French heritage, said the language came to her naturally and easily. She took French at 13 and studied it all through high school. It was her major in college. Music was her minor. She spent her junior year abroad in Tours, France.

”One day I visited a chateau in the village of Chenonceau. Before I even stepped in, I knew every inch of it. I told the guide where certain rooms were, which way to go. I was completely familiar with the layout, like I’d been there many times before. I don’t know if you believe in reincarnation,” said Tieger, ”but deep down I feel that I’ve lived lives as a French person.”

Years later Tieger would return to France to visit friends she had met online and to record and play gigs, from house parties to concert halls in Paris.

Appropriately enough, just in the last few weeks Tieger has posted a new Spotify playlist entitled, “My Love Affair with France.”

In 2009, Tieger’s album, ‘Nos Mots’, was awarded best album of the year by Motif Magazine, and in 2010 Motif nominated her for Best Female Vocalist.

Her song, “Tell Me Please,” which was nominated for Song of the Year by the Providence Phoenix in 2000, may be the definitive piece that showcases Tieger’s musical acumen and vocal prowess. Beginning with her signature staccato electric piano lines, the song, at 4 minutes and 7 seconds, is a mini opera that draws the listener into a melodic and emotional whirlpool.

She proposes a litany of direct questions to her lover, “Will you still think of us, when you hear the word trust?”, “Will our love last and live in this new century?” and “Are we here for the long haul?”

The author, in her fear and self-doubt, pleads for affirmation with an aching, soaring vocal that finally falls back down to Earth, only to echo the title once more.

A Hollywood artist

Tieger’s original music has been used in various television shows over the years. Her instrumental ‘Coronado’ was used as bumper music for Eva Longoria’s “Desperate House Makeovers” on the Oprah Winfrey network. Other instrumental work by Tieger was used on A & E’s “Catherine the Great”, on the food network’s “Amazing Wedding Cakes” and The History Channel’s documentary on the Mexican War.

“I’m not getting rich on the royalties, but it’s nice to get a check in the mail once in a while,” she said.

Tieger, who has played the local singer/songwriter bohemian circuit from CAV, Beans & Bags and The Inner City Café, to being a mainstay at The Hear in Rhode Island Folk concerts, currently concentrates on teaching.

“I teach 4 afternoons a week at the French American School of Rhode Island. I’ve been there 13 years and presently have 23 students,” said Tieger. ”Every year I have more students enrolling. My piano teaching style is old school. I don’t use apps, and I don’t use YouTube. My students must learn to read music without any tricks.”

Is there a new album in the works?

“I haven’t had a song that bothered me to be written in a while,” she said.

Bothered, I asked?

“I mean a song or an idea that made me get up in the middle of the night to work on it, but I’m sure there’s one right around the corner. Every time I say this will be my last album, it isn’t.”

As she concluded the interview, Tieger’s voice became soft and certain.

“Sitting down at the keyboard, I get lost in the feelings and passion of music. And when I’m playing, time has no meaning.”

Welcome to the warm, wonderful days of late spring, as we transition into summer. On the evening of June 25th, the Alliance Française will present their annual Fête de la Musique from 5 to 9 PM. Erin Quinton and I will perform a short set of my French songs and instrumentals at 7 PM.

My granddaughter Elena is growing like a weed. She and the family moved to Maine last fall. Her current favorite show is Bluey, which we watch when she comes, and she has done some exploring at the keyboard. Here we are enjoying it together as we sometimes do when she visits.

In other news, work continues albeit remotely on the Nightsong album. The keys and vocals are all recorded, along with a fair amount of the strings. Next, plans are underway to add drums, bass, and guitar, and the final tracks to be added will be reeds and the rest of the strings.

This will be a rich album, the full-length follow up to my 2009 "Trilogy of Nightsongs: A Romantic View of Vampires", and hopefully a fitting representation of our 2009 production Nightsong: A Vampire Musical. Please stay tuned!

However there are spring blossoms and buds on the trees, and the warmer weather seems imminent.

Happy to report I have had both doses of the vaccine, although my day to day activity hasn't altered much at this point. When I teach at school, the students and I are still masked, surfaces are cleaned regularly, and hand sanitizer is always at the ready. All of this is likely to continue until the end of the academic year in June. Yet preparation is underway for a second recital, which will include a number of interesting pieces, from Classical to Jazz to Pop.

I am looking forward to July, at which time my favorite bands have a number of concerts and shows booked. It's been a very quiet winter! I don't personally have any performances on the calendar, largely because my band mates are all busy with teaching and other projects. But I do hope to resume recording for the Nightsong album, since it has been tabled for several months now.

At four months old, my granddaughter Elena is growing like a weed, and appears to be a very happy and bright little person; always smiling! It's a genuine joy whenever she visits.

In honor of Earth Day, why not think about planting a tree or two in the near future? I read online that the Taunton Public Library has free trees available. I'm a member of Arbor Day, so my annual membership brings new saplings to life throughout the year.

Here is a photo from a performance in 2004, See more about it below.

Newly posted today, rediscovered after 17 years, is a video of the first public performance of Something's Wrong from Trilogy of Nightsongs, following its release of in 1996. I was accompanied by Jon Patrick Brennan on percussion, so you will have to imagine and mentally add the famous bass line as you listen to it. You can find it under the heading LISTEN of my site, or by visiting

Life continues, as we wait for things to open up again in a big way. In the meantime, be well, take care of yourself and your loved ones, and I'll write again this summer.

In my house, this is a major event. With no exaggeration, we keep 20 calendars each year. Much like the Changing of the Guard at Buckingham Palace, we go room to room at the start of each month to turn over each calendar and take inspiration from the new images. Some calendars are for keeping track of dates and appointments, others purely decorative.

I know many people are looking forward to happily saying Good Riddance to the year that brought the Corona Virus Pandemic. However that's not all that it brought; it called upon our creativity. Unable to meet face to face, many people began to hold Zoom meetings with friends, family, and business associates. I personally met faithfully with other Alliance Francaise members for a weekly Cafe-Croissant meeting, and periodically with family members for a group zoom meeting. Most people found ways to work remotely.

As performing musicians, we were obliged to find alternative ways of reaching out to fans to share our music. While I still don't feel comfortable doing Live Streams, I have certainly gotten braver about recording Kari Live at Home videos, and the response has been most heartening. After viewing the recent blockbuster Amazon Prime series "Queen's Gambit for example, I became obsessed with the Erik Satie piece "Gnossienne No. 1" that was played during a couple of episodes. I ordered the music, learned it, and just posted a video of myself playing it on my acoustic piano. To my delight, my performance was added to a Classical Mix on youtube, immediately adding views.

My previous blog announced the arrival of my lovely granddaughter, who truly was the perfect holiday gift, making for a beautiful end to this difficult year. Before we completely dismiss or -- worse -- condemn the entire year of 2020, might I suggest that we all examine the ways in which the necessary constraints brought about our growth and development?

That said, I AM eagerly looking forward to a time when the vaccine finally eliminates the need to don a mask as soon as one steps out of one's home! It will be wonderful to attend restaurants and concerts, to enter stores and offices without having to stand on little circles 6 feet apart, and to be partitioned behind plexiglass everywhere. What we need now is to take stock of our growth, feel gratitude for the good things that have come out of this world crisis, and practice patience as we enter the new year. It will take continued courage, but we're almost there, everyone! Huzzah for the rollout FINALLY of the vaccine!!

Happy New Year, my friends, and see you on the other side!

karitieger.comtag:karitieger.com,2005:Post/65009222020-12-16T14:28:32-05:002023-04-18T11:35:52-04:00A New Additon to the Family
Happy Holidays!!

On December 3rd, my granddaughter entered this world. With both parents being musicians, it's entirely likely that she too will be musical. And if so, since her grandmother, great grandfather, and great great grandmother are and were also musicians, this would make her the 5th generation in our family!

I will keep this blog short, as there is unfortunately no other musical news to report at this time, due to Covid. But here is a photo of Elena Ostara Brennan and your truly, Kari Tieger.

Hope you have a happy and most especially healthy holiday season and New Year 2021. Here's to seeing an end to this pandemic, and resuming some of the many sidelined activities we all so dearly miss!

karitieger.comtag:karitieger.com,2005:Post/62810262020-04-13T14:19:40-04:002023-04-18T11:46:15-04:00Filling the Hours of Lockdown
Some of the things I've done in recent weeks to pass the time include attending online workshops to try to develop new skills, vocalizing, and practicing. This morning just for a lark, I (re-) sightread Beethoven's Sonatina in G Minor, Opus 49, something I hadn't thought about in ten or even fifteen years. Torture is best when self inflicted, right? Well truth be told, it wasn't all that awful. The notes came back somewhat easily to my fingers. But the piano IS sliding out of tune, so I was glad no one else had to witness it.

Most musicians these days are doing live streams. That's not really my forte, so I have posted some older videos and mp3s from YouTube and SoundCloud, and will probably continue to do that. I did share a song from my practice session, calling it the next best thing to a live stream. I continue to prepare a song for our next foray into the studio, whenever that happens, and to work on a set for this year's Fete de la Musique, not knowing when or if that may happen. It helps structure my practice.

I thought I'd share a photo from 2010, in honor of happier times and in the hope that we may soon get back to making music in public. Photo by the late great Ed LeDoux.

These are challenging times for all of us. Along with watching Netflix and Amazon Prime, I encourage you to read, meditate, find -- or resume -- a hobby, discover your inner resources.

Hopefully it won't be too long before I can see your smiling faces again. Hang in there!
karitieger.comtag:karitieger.com,2005:Post/62257342020-02-24T11:45:33-05:002023-04-18T11:44:20-04:00Work Continues this Winter on Nightsong Vocals for Kevin Campbell Songs
Last month we tackled Like Raindrops and on March 3rd we will take on Dark Night of the Soul. Kevin's songs are notoriously difficult to sing, so I work on them daily, leading up to the next session. We will be giving it a slightly different treatment, but I thought it would be interesting to include the youtube link for a version I performed with the Cast at our Broadway evening in October of 2009, prior to premiering Nightsong at the Saint Anne's Arts and Cultural Center in November of that year, in you're interested in giving it a listen. Simply copy and paste, or search for Dark Night of the Soul at my youtube Channel. https://youtu.be/V47rQ77Zhyk

I hope to go back this spring to begin fleshing out the arrangements for both songs, and we may even begin work on the Nightsong theme. Mostly all the other songs from the show have at least been begun.

Having made a strong showing in January, preparation is underway with my French American School of RI (FASRI) students for their Spring Recital. I'm pleased to report there will be at least one original song on the program, a Disney theme, and several popular songs, along with the usual repertoire. I was thrilled to receive flowers in January, and my smile says it all.

This really has been a mild, relatively snowless winter so far, but I can't quite believe we're out of the woods yet. I do hope it doesn't snow on March 3rd! That said, I'm guessing you are also looking forward to Spring and the return of flowers. See you soon!
karitieger.comtag:karitieger.com,2005:Post/60869302020-01-11T14:40:44-05:002023-04-18T11:42:26-04:00Current Projects and Karitieger.com Hosted at Bandzoogle Now
Happy New Year!! Now that the Holidays are behind us, Jon Brennan, Matt Ricci and I are resuming work on the Nightsong project. I'll be recording some vocals later this month, and we hope to begin filling in more backing tracks between now and the Spring. Some of these songs were begun more than ten years ago, so it's clear that this album will take longer from start to finish than any other Kari Tieger release. As often, it started as an EP and has grown into a full length album! These will be my interpretation of songs from the show written by yours truly and Kevin Campbell. We first produced our Broadway style musical Nightsong, A Vampire Musical in November 2009 at St. Ann's Arts and Culture Center in Woonsocket, RI.

FYI: For the past month or so, karitieger.com is no longer being hosted at Hostbaby.com, but rather at Bandzoogle. I'm still negotiating my way around, but have recently added some photos from through the years.

While I've always been completely self-supporting, I do plan to offer a couple of subscription tiers soon, so that the Superfans and Megafans among you can help support new projects and music we create. (Not to worry: this won't represent a huge outlay on any one person's part.
Surprisingly, I didn't include any photos from that performance in my previous blog, which I plan to rectify right now. This first shot was taken during Coronado -- Kirk's on sax, Jon's on bass, and Erin is providing hand percussion with palmas during the musical break, after which she resumed acoustic guitar. In the second photo of Green Eyes, Kirk is now on flute, Jon's on acoustic guitar, and Erin's on viola.

2019 was largely about getting Touch of Magic Revisited mixed and mastered, culminating with our amazing CD release party at the TRIAD Normandy Studio. I believe those of you who attended will agree that it was a great success.

Now as I look forward to 2020, our next project is the Nightsong Album, for which I've already recorded a number of tracks, yet still have a ways to go. It will contain my interpretation of the songs from the musical, and perhaps one day we will also be able to release an original cast recording, if we manage to recover the lost files.

For now, I'll close and wish you all a healthy and happy holiday season with thanks for your friendship and ongoing support of Kart Tieger Music.

With a more ambitious set list than has become customary of late, we presented an hour of music, primarily Kari Tieger tunes, but also songs by Kevin Campbell and Frank Sinatra, closing with America the Beautiful. (See my youtube Channel.)

There was an especially warm response from the audience, which consisted of about half Seniors from the high rise where it was held and half Kari Tieger friends and fans, some new, some longtime and loyal.

karitieger.comtag:karitieger.com,2005:Post/59881912019-06-23T20:00:00-04:002023-04-18T11:38:12-04:00Summer of 2019 -- Post Release and Performances
The new CD Touch of Magic Revisited has been out for exactly one month now. Our CD Release Party was great fun, especially getting to perform with so many talented performers. I was joined onstage by Jon Patrick Brennan on bass and backing vocals, of course, with Sara Brennan adding some additional vocals. Our band also included Erin Quinton on viola and violin, Kirk Feather on saxophone and flute, and Al Lombardi on drums and percussion. And for our final song, Live and Let Live, we had a small chorus of vocalists from the French American School. An intimate yet enthusiastic audience cheered us on.

Last weekend was the annual Fete de la Musique at the Alliance Francaise, where I played with Kirk Feather, and there will be one more performance with Kirk this summer.

-> On August 25th at the Veterans Memorial Park (416 Hunt Street) in Central Falls from 1-2 PM, Kirk Feather and I will be joined by Jon Patrick Brennan and Erin Quinton.
The mixing process took some time, since there were more than 20 tracks to consider, and we opted to re record the final song Spectrum, which had originally been a hidden track.

Last week was an intensive period of mastering at TRIAD, and now we are listening back carefully to see if there are any last minute tweaks we wish to make before sending everything off to Oasis for printing and pressing.

Engineers Matt Ricci, Jon Patrick Brennan and I are all very proud of the work we've done over the past 15 months, and of how the results truly reflect our combined input.

We have scheduled the Release Party for May 26th from 2 to 5 PM at TRIAD Recording Complex, 25 Market Street, Warren 02885. There will be a brief performance of select songs from the album, after which we will eat, drink, and be merry.

We hope you will consider joining us!
karitieger.comtag:karitieger.com,2005:Post/59881882019-01-29T19:00:00-05:002023-04-18T11:25:57-04:00Happy 2019!
Oh, my. January has now fled by, and there's been no blog posted for a couple of months! It seems high time I did so.

Hope your holidays were joyful, and that you got to reconnect with your dear ones. To my mind, more than receiving or even giving gifts, that's the real reason for the season. And now a new year is well underway.

As an update for the progress of Touch of Magic Revisited, we've been mixing for just over a year at this point, and the end does appear to be in sight. It became clear that rushing to finish, simply to release it by the end of calendar year 2018, would have compromised the overall quality.

Excluding the holidays, Matt, Jon and I have instead opted to go on mixing at a steady pace, meeting about once a week. Most of the tracks (and there are a LOT of them, 21 to be exact!) are sounding outstanding.

For the next month or so we will continue tweaking them, and then start to look toward planning our release party. We may even pre-release a track or two!

In the short run, here's hoping you have a pleasant Valentine's Day. As an aside, I suggest you stop by my youtube channel if it's been awhile, and please subscribe, if you haven't already. I've posted some new videos since the fall.

Happy 2019 to one and all!
karitieger.comtag:karitieger.com,2005:Post/59881872018-10-28T20:00:00-04:002023-04-18T11:23:57-04:00November 15 Open Mic Feature at the Mediator
Autumnal Greetings, One and All! Fall is in full swing, with Thanksgiving & the Holidays right around the corner. Erin Quinton and I had a wonderful rehearsal this morning and we're getting psyched for our upcoming feature at the Mediator Open Mic on Thursday, November 15th.

With an obligatory focus on gratitude, she and I plan to perform some classic Kari Tieger songs and instrumentals, but we've also added a tune or two for the holiday season. At Erin's request, Jon Patrick Brennan arranged a new viola part for her on one of my most popular French songs. All in all, the evening promises to be great fun, and we hope to see you there!!

TOUCH OF MAGIC REVISITED UPDATE:

For those of you anxiously awaiting the re-release of Touch of Magic, it seems you will have to wait a bit longer. As is often the case, LIFE happened, while we were busy making our plans.

It became clear that in trying to get the album out before the end of 2018, we would have had to rush certain aspects, and I feared the quality might suffer as a result. In order to give everything the attention it deserves, we've opted instead to release Touch Revisited in the first half of 2019, at which time we also hope to put together a celebratory Release Party. PLEASE STAY TUNED!!

STUDIO UPDATES:

Remixing Touch of Magic is nearly finished. Matt Ricci, Jon Patrick Brennan and I have now worked our way through all of the 20 tracks, and are at the final stage where only minor tweaking is required. We are currently re-recording Spectrum from stratch, because this final, hidden track from the 1998 release was lost in digital transfer. Piano & Vocals, and Acoustic Guitar are done, and next we'll add Viola, Flute, and Bassoon.

As you are no doubt aware, Summer is winding down, and soon people will head back to school, yours truly also, to teach piano at the French American School. It will be good to see everyone again. Enjoy the remaining weeks of summer!!

I've asked Sherry to join my violist/violinist Erin Quinton Erban and me for a very special evening at 6 PM (Doors at 5:45) on Saturday May 19th at the Brooklyn Coffee Teahouse. Erin and I will be performing Kari Tieger songs and instrumentals that have string parts. Before our two sets, Sherry will come up to do a few of her originals, and it promises to be a lovely night of music. Hope to see you there!!
karitieger.comtag:karitieger.com,2005:Post/59881832018-01-20T19:00:00-05:002022-05-10T02:38:09-04:00KT, YouTube, and an ENDANGERED Partner Contract
Greetings, Good Subscribers.

I received word this week from Google that because my Youtube channel has not reached 4 thousand listening hours in the past 12 month period, I will soon lose my partner contract, and with it the right to monetize and earn royalties from my original music. I was given a month before they terminate the contract, to try to recitify the situation. I've been told that should my songs reach that figure, the contract and monetization will be reinstated. Here's the link: https://www.youtube.com/user/KariTieger

A social media appeal for more listeners was made a couple of weeks ago, and the response has been most heartening. As of this date, the Analytics for this month's (12/23/17-1/19/18) watch time compare quite favorably to last month's, so much so that the monthly total has apparently increased by 268.21% (!).

This is based on 550 minutes (9 hours, 9 minutes) of views, as well as an increase in comments. I actually earned 35 cents in royalties this month, as compared to 2 cents previously. This is no small feat, people. If you were among those who watched Kari Tieger videos this month, I thank you kindly!!

Still and all, I suspect it may not be enough to protect my partner contract and monetization rights, simply because there simply isn't enough time to garner the required listening hours.

However I AM extremely grateful to all of you who have taken the time to listen to my music, and I hope you will continue to do so going forward, as time affords.

Greetings, All!

It's Official: On December 11th, we begin remixing my first CD on TIGER SOUND, Touch of Magic (1998), with the goal of re-releasing it in 2018 for its 20th Anniversary. Beloved by many, this promises to be a very interesting project. I have long wished to hear the album with updated production values, and am most anxious to begin.

You should know that it wasn't easy even finding someone to digitize the tracks. Due to an outdated format, a number of false starts and dead-end inquiries over the past couple of years eventually led to the excellent conversion house Sonicraft A2DX Lab in Freehold, New Jersey, where Chief Transfer Engineer Kevin Przybylowski successfully transfered the analog reel-to-reel files to a digital format, so that we could begin work on them at TRIAD-Normandy.

Jon Patrick Brennan has been invaluable, as always. First, he painstakingly listened to everything to ensure that all the original tracks were in fact represented. And he has already done and will continue to do pre-production to facilitate the whole process. Next Matt Ricci, Jon and I will work together on the songs one by one, until we're all satisfied that they sound as good as they possibly can.

I'll post updates from time to time, so that you can keep track of our progress. I hope many of you are as excited as we are to see Touch come back to life!

Until then, I'd like to wish everyone a warm and wonderful holiday season, with a healthy and happy 2018 to follow.

Musically yours,

Kari T.

It was my goal when school ended in June to play at a couple of new open mics, and to take advantage of any other performance opportunities that came my way.

Happy to report that I did in fact perform at the Borealis & Pub on Park Open Mics, but also for the Fete de la Musique, at a music party hosted by friends in Londonderry, NH, and at a beautiful B&B in the New Hampshire Woods. I include a few photos.

I also began work in earnest on my next recording project, a Nightsong EP, which will feature several songs I composed expressly for our 2009 production of the Broadway style show, as well as two or three vampire songs penned by my coauthor Kevin Campbell.

See you next month!!

FASRI students on June 1st, through the Fete de la Musique at the Alliance Francaise on the Summer Solstice, the month of June fairly flew by! Watching fireworks this past week, I shook my head in wonder that we now find ourselves halfway through 2017.

A music party with friends in NH beckons this weekend, and later this summer, following a production meeting or two, there are plans for studio work on a new Nightsong EP. I'm excited to be adding to my catalog!

We recently celebrated Bill's 70th Birthday, at which -- not surprisingly -- there were a number of live performances. I'm pleased to say I started things off with a set of my originals and one Beatles cover.

There are 4 new videos from the event at my channel, and here's a beautiful photo of me performing, taken that day by Sara Brennan.

Meanwhile, it continues to be a cool, rainy spring, but I will leave you with a sweet shot I took of the Muguet des bois (Lily of the Valley) in our Gnomes' Garden on a bright, sunny day earlier this month, before they are done blooming for this year. See you later this summer!!

Happy Mother's Day!!

The warmer weather is pulling us all out of hibernation mode. At FASRI the academic year is fast winding down, and my students and I are finishing preparation for our upcoming Spring Recital on June 1st. I've begun to think about summer break and how to most frutifully fill the time off from school.

Next weekend I will be performing a short set of mostly originals at a friends' 70th birthday party, and soon plan to check out a couple of local open mics.

It's also time to turn think about completing the long-awaited Nightsong EP. It will include about a half dozen more songs from the musical, excluding the original 3 that inspired the show, from Trilogy of Nightsongs: A Romantic View of Vampires (Something's Wrong, Midnight Muse, and Rise Up, Love). Some of the songs will most likely be by Kevin Campbell, such as the title track.

I'm excited at the prospect of going back into the studio, and look forward to seeing many of you over the summer.
karitieger.comtag:karitieger.com,2005:Post/59881772017-04-24T20:00:00-04:002023-04-18T11:16:36-04:00The Nos Mots Piano Book is Released!!
Earlier this week, I suddenly realized I had never shared with you that my Nos mots Piano Book, companion to the award winning album of the same name, has been released for several weeks.

A collaborative effort with Alex Tirrell that was many years in the making, this beautiful book makes available for the first time scores and lyrics from my 2nd French album, along with a few select photos. Presented in English and French, it includes several additional instrumental parts, and can be viewed and purchased both digitally and in hard copy at both lulu.com and Amazon. We invite you to check it out at your earliest convenience! https://www.Amazon.com/Piano-Chords-Artist-Songbook-French/dp/1365855570

This is just to announce formally that Valentine was duly released on February 10th, and as of this writing we have distributed just about half of the 150 copies that were made.

I'm thrilled with the way the tracks look and sound -- Jon Patrick Brennan did an excellent job with the graphics (just as he did putting the songs together), and I think the whole CD package perfectly complements the content. We've been getting great feedback, and virtually everyone loves the album.

If you haven't yet listened to or downloaded any of Valentine, you may do so at https://www.cdbaby.com/cd/karitieger2. It is also widely available at many digital partners, such as Amazon.com, ITunes, Deezer, Google Play, Spotify, and Pandora.

Here is the beautiful cover of Valentine. Hope you all like it as much as we do. Enjoy!!

On that date it can be heard at many sites, including ITunes, Amazon, Spotify, Pandora, Deezer, and Soundrop (among others), and of course at cdbaby.com!

There will still be an official Press Release on February 10th, and copies are always available for purchase from yours truly via face-to-face delivery.

As a teaser, I will say that at least two of the people in this photo play on the CD with me:

'Tis the season of Love, people. Leaving Politics aside, try to be kind to one another. <3
karitieger.comtag:karitieger.com,2005:Post/59881742017-01-13T19:00:00-05:002017-01-13T23:02:00-05:00Update on the Valentine's Project
An UPDATE: Hello, People. It's Saturday the 14th of January, and Valentine's Day is now just a month away. For those of you who haven't gathered as much through recent posts on Facebook and Instagram, I thought I'd let you know that Natalie Diaz is now NOT in fact doing the cover for Valentine. Unfortunately she had way too much going on to do it justice.

So Jon Patrick Brennan -- already Co-Producer and one of the recording engineers for the project, as well as a contributing musician, AND composer/arranger of the viola and English Horn parts -- offered to do it, then subsequently decided to do all the graphics for the CD. You might say he got inspired, once he saw the cover photo I was planning to use. The rest of the theme and color scheme seemed to flow naturally, and yes, the only hint I will give you is that there may be a rose or two involved. Duh!! It IS a Valentine's release by Kari Tieger, after all...

Here we are putting the finishing touches on the booklet, and we're really happy with the results!

At any rate, the Mastering is now complete, and we will soon be submitting all the files to Oasis for duplication. I believe the graphics are a beautiful match for the audio content of my Valentine single, and I couldn't be more pleased! :)

karitieger.comtag:karitieger.com,2005:Post/59881732016-12-30T19:00:00-05:002016-12-31T07:18:57-05:00NEW YEAR'S EVE 2016
Unlike New Year's Eve 2015, when I performed in a program at the Eagle in Fall River along with the Oh Nos and Dave Tessier's All Stars, this evening will be a very quiet night at home. Currently recovering from a sinus infection (all too common for yours truly at this time of year!), the idea of curling up on the couch to watch TV sounds FAR more appealing than being out on the town, mingling and partying.

What I am doing TODAY is pulling together all we will need for the CD booklet. Jon and I spent two excellent final mixing sessions with Tony Ricci in the last half of December, after which we determined that our 3-song single -- now to be called simply Valentine -- is ready for mastering! What an awesome feeling, to finish out 2016!!

I've enlisted the help of the inestimable Natalie Diaz (from Illumination) to create the cover for this 2017 release, and Valentine will be my 4th project with Oasis CD duplication. I include images of its predecessors from 2008, 2009, and 2014. If you own any of these albums, you can attest to how beautiful they are.

Please check back, to keep track of the album's progress, and we will see you in 2017!!
karitieger.comtag:karitieger.com,2005:Post/59881722016-12-14T19:00:00-05:002016-12-15T10:16:39-05:00HAPPY, HAPPY HOLIDAYS!
We are mid way through December, and I'm happy to report that recording is now complete. Mixing and mastering sessions have been booked for the last two weeks of the year, so it seems we are right on schedule at this point for a February release.

I'd like to take this occasion to wish you all a bright and merry, warm and wonderful holiday -- however you celebrate it -- surrounded by the shining faces of your loved ones, followed by a happy and healthy New Year.

Here I am at our last recording session, after meeting producer Michael Jonzun and his family, who were visiting Phil Greene at the studio. They were lovely people!

See you in 2017!

karitieger.comtag:karitieger.com,2005:Post/59881712016-11-21T19:00:00-05:002023-04-18T13:16:11-04:00Thanksgiving Thoughts
In the wake of the recent election, which incurred and encouraged so much divisiveness, it seems to me that we as a nation must now strive for unity. The holidays have traditionally been the time of year when, to quote Scrooge's nephew Fred in A Christmas Carol, "men and women seem by one consent to open their shut-up hearts freely, and to think of people below them [i.e. less fortunate] as if they really were fellow passengers to the grave, and not another race of creatures bound on other journeys." Nephew Fred refers to Yuletide as "a good time; a kind, forgiving, charitable, pleasant time." I have always felt this way too, and would hope that this year proves no different than any other in my memory.

*****

Our single continues to inch toward completion. The English horn (or Cor Anglais) solo sounds beautiful, and here is a photo of yours truly with the lovely and talented Jane Murray.

At the same session, Jon added bass to another of the songs, and I include a photo of him wailing away, totally in his element.

Here's hoping you enjoy this national feast and gratitude day, however you choose to celebrate it, surrounded by dear ones. Count your blessings, my friends!

In peace,

Last week we recorded some flute tracks, and this Friday we're adding an English Horn line to one of the songs. "Bit by bit, putting it together," as the line from the Barbra song goes.

ALSO, Two Kari Tieger songs in French will soon be featured on a webcast this week from Montreal Radio Cite, thanks to longtime fan and radio host Gerard Mauvillain, the link for which is www.montrealradiocite.com. As soon as he gives me the details, I will post a short update so that some of you may catch it in real time, although I suspect it will remain available on their site.

We did get some of the recording done this summer for the 3-song single, just not as much as I had hoped. However the single is definitely starting to come together. If all goes well, we will finish recording the basic tracks in the next month or so, and be ready to mix by the end of the year. The plan is to release it for Valentine's Day.

Lessons with both my private students and all those at the French American School (where I now teach 4 afternoons each week) are going extremely well, and we are currently preparing songs for our Winter Concert in January.

This is a short update; I hope to have more to report next month.

As of this date, all three songs have been begun with piano/vocals. Next up is recording a viola part for one, which may well complete it. Then we'll add some drums, bass, and guitar to the other two, and see where we stand. One might call for some jazz flute. The project is shaping up nicely; the only obstacle is -- as always -- finding time in common with the players and engineers.

Perhaps we'll post a teaser or two in the weeks to come.

Here's a recent photo of me in the studio, listening back to vocal tracks.

PLEASE STAY TUNED!!

Happy to report that just 7 months later, that number has more than doubled, to 75. While it's still a long way from the requisite 1,000 needed to qualify for a paid subscription status, it IS progress.

I've posted about 25 new videos over the past year, and will continue to add more as Ollie and I unearth them from the archives. There may even be some new ones recorded this summer. You can reach my youtube directly from this site, or by visiting: https://www.youtube.com/karitieger

As always, thanks for listening, and PLEASE STAY TUNED.
karitieger.comtag:karitieger.com,2005:Post/59881652016-03-10T19:00:00-05:002023-04-18T13:20:36-04:00Spring Has Sprung!
Now that the weather has turned warm again, I'm inspired to write about the recent winter that has passed us by. It seems the groundhog was right -- Spring has come early to New England!

On January 21, 2016 at the French American School (FASRI) Winter Recital, my students and I performed a song I'd written called "En rigolant" ["While Laughing"] to promote friendship and peace featuring new French lyrics to the tune of Jolly Old Saint Nicholas. http://fasri.org/news/showcase-talent-our-extracurricular-musicians

On March 23, 2016 several of my students will perform a short song I wrote called "Ces deux langues" ["These Two Languages"] at the Rhode Island State House, as part of a flag raising ceremony, in honor of this year's Francophonie.

I'll be back in a month or so to talk about summer events!

I will keep this brief, because it's such a busy time of year. In the midst of the merry madness -- partying, running around buying and making last minute gifts -- do try to find your center and remember the reason for the season, people. It's about LOVE, and connecting with those who mean the most to you. It's all about gifts from the heart. <3

On that note, I want to tell you all that there's a new page at karitieger.com where you can view my favorite youtube videos, both of my own music and by others. I will be adding to it, but I invite you to enjoy!

Be kind to yourself and others this holiday season. See you in 2016!
karitieger.comtag:karitieger.com,2005:Post/59881632015-11-01T19:00:00-05:002023-04-18T13:27:01-04:00How Can It Be November?
At our last blog entry, it was the height of summer, and the warm lazy days still stretched ahead, full of promise and potential. In August, my son and daughter-in-law were finalizing their wedding plans. Then September arrived and proceeded to go by in a BLUR. They were married September 26th on a perfect fall day in beautiful Colt State Park, and I can't even begin to imagine where October went!

While performances of Kari Tieger Music have not been plentiful this year, we have begun recording some new material, and hope to release both a single and an EP, heading forward into 2016. Stay tuned!

karitieger.comtag:karitieger.com,2005:Post/59881622015-06-25T20:00:00-04:002023-04-18T13:28:53-04:00A Wonderful Performance
If you were able to join us in May at the Alliance Francaise, you know how much fun the evening was -- the band and I agree that it was one of our favorite performances ever! We packed the cozy little Maison de la Francophonie, with a break for poesie and refreshments in the main house, and thoroughly enjoyed ourselves. Dominique Gregoire even offered us a glass of champagne afterwards. :) I thought I would share a few photos from the event.

Glorious Spring has arrived and with it seasonal allergies, but every rose does have its thorn, so don't get me wrong, I'm not complaining -- It's just challenging to sing around the sneezes!

In spite of the pollen we have a couple of shows coming up in May!

The first is The Eclectic Quartet's rescheduled Valentine's Performance at the Alliance Francaise on May 8th, and the second will find me solo at the Brooklyn Coffee Teahouse as part of the final Saturday of the RISA Songwriter Sessions for this year on May 16th. Still, my intrepid crocuses are pushing their tender shoots above the soil line. I have every confidence that they will be in full bloom by Easter. Here's an early photo, and I'll be back with another when they have blossomed.

I too have come out of hibernation, and there are a few gigs coming up this Spring. Please check the calendar for details, but look for me at the Brooklyn Coffee Teahouse on April 11th and May 16th, and consider coming to a very special Valentine's in May evening of poetry and music with the Eclectic Quartet at the Alliance Francaise on May 8th.
karitieger.comtag:karitieger.com,2005:Post/59881582015-02-12T19:00:00-05:002023-04-18T13:23:43-04:00No Gig Today -- Come See Us in May!
The Eclectic Quartet was supposed to perform tonight at the Alliance Francaise de Providence for a Valentine's Music and Poetry evening, but we have postponed the event until May 8th. So much so, that we were obliged to postpone our Valentine's Weekend performance that we had scheduled for February 13th until early May. Couple this with a painful ingrown nail in my right thumb which made practicing impossible, and you have one unhappy camper, indeed! Fortunately, the nail seems to be healing now, but the relentless snow continues to blanket our area, and we have run out of places to put it!

Frankly, one begins to feel downright DOOMED when, for the third Sunday in a row, the forecast includes a foot of snow. Some of my students may be wondering if they will ever have a lesson again, before the spring thaw.

Meanwhile, I'd like to take this opportunity to inform you that shipping at CDBaby has been reduced to only 1 cent through the end of the month. This means that even if you purchase three CDs, you will pay no more than .01 in shipping and handling!

Additionally, the Trilogy of Nightsongs: A Romantic View of Vampires EP has been discounted by two dollars, so this truly would be ideal time to finally buy Illumination (if you don't already own it), and while you're at it, why not pick up a copy of Trilogy and another Kari Tieger album?

While you ponder the possibilities, please enjoy this photo of last week's pretty, if inconvenient, snowfall.

karitieger.comtag:karitieger.com,2005:Post/59881562015-01-22T19:00:00-05:002023-04-18T11:46:59-04:00A Packet of Rave Reviews
It all started with Cyrus Rhodes, who posted a stunning endorsement of Illumination at Musesmuse.com in late December of 2014. In fact he was so impressed by the album, he urged me to commission further reviews from his staff of writers, even offering to nominate it for Album of the Year. Talk about exceeding expectations for a "free" review!

I followed up on his suggestion, and was blown away by both the overwhelmingly positive response from his team of writers, and the dazzling diversity of genre descriptions and artists referenced in their reviews.

Artists included some of the usual suspects -- Kate Bush, Tori Amos, Annie Lennox, Buffy St. Marie, and Norah Jones -- and in a somewhat similar group, I also found Judy Collins and Joni Mitchell. But then I saw myself compared to the likes of Sarah MacLachlan, Loreena McKennit, Celine Dion, Barbra Streisand, and Lana Del Rey, as well as a string of other artists, some of whose work I had never heard. One comment I value greatly said that my songs showed "honesty like Sia, Emiliana Torrini, Sineaid O'Connor, Imogen Heap and Aimee Mann." To discover the other names, you will just have to peruse the reviews!

I thought I would also list some of those genres, to be followed by links to the critiques themselves. Reviewers referred to what I do as Intellectual/ Theatrical Pop, Dramatic and Melancholy Pop, High End Orchestral Vocal-Pop, Celtic Folk, and two particular favorite phrases: Passionate Neo-Classically driven Pop Rock, and a Multidimensional Euro-World fusion of indie-rock and modern neo-classical, psychedelic rock. Wow. After reading all of this, if I hadn't produced the album, I would be extremely curious to check it out!!

It's wintertime now, although the milder than usual temperatures might convince one otherwise. Kari Tieger Music found its way to the ears of new fans across the globe, largely though Reverbnation (where we are currently holding fast at #4) and Radio Airplay.

With holiday craziness mostly in the rearview mirror, there are some upcoming performances on the calendar, a couple of recording projects planned, and we've just learned that 10 online reviews of Illumination are due to be published within the next month, thanks to Cyrus Rhodes of musesmuse.com.

We'd like to thank you for your ongoing support, and mention that we hope to continue to post new tracks and youtube videos for your enjoyment.

Here's a photo of today's sunrise, which reflects our rosy, optimistic mood!

I consider myself more of a recording artist than a performer, so my youtube channel has never been a very big focus. Until more recently, that is.

[Photo of Kari Tieger's Eclectic Quartet (Barbara Zdravesky on cello, Jon Patrick Brennan on bass, Ron Schmitt on percussion, and yours truly at the keys) at the Brooklyn Coffee Teahouse, with Alex Tirrell on recorder, December 9th,2011.] I'll try to find something from this performance to add to my channel in the not too distant future.

Lately I have been making a concerted effort to release more videos, some of which are older gems (including some rare covers!) having only just been rediscovered by my husband Ollie, who has chronicled my whole career for more than 20 years.

This link -- https://www.youtube.com/karitieger -- will take you to my youtube channel, where you will find videos in both English and French, first and foremost originals, but yes, a few covers, many of which were recorded at an annual summer music party.

I've just learned that artists cannot qualify for paid subscriptions on youtube until they have 1,000 subscribers. Since mine currently number 34, I have a ways to go before that may be a possibility to even consider. But why not go view a video or two, and subscribe while there?

I plan to keep unearthing and posting these performances, and will also add newer videos as they become available. Happy listening, and thanks for reading!
karitieger.comtag:karitieger.com,2005:Post/59881532014-09-02T20:00:00-04:002015-01-23T02:41:10-05:00Another week, another radio interview??
August 2014 was a month for 3 radio interviews, two of which were done live (8 minutes, and 30 minutes, respectively) on the Women's Radio Network in Sayville, NY, founded by Ray Charles' daughter Robyn Lajoya Charles.

The most recent one, taped with Mike Maino at Rhode Island's only Classical Station, WCRI, for his program "Conducting Conversations" will air from 7-8 PM on Sunday, September 9th, after which it will be available as a podcast.

I was very glad to have the first two shorter shows under my belt, because prep for the third one on WCRI and the actual interview itself proved to be great fun, especially because it WAS taped, and not live. And the hour-long format allowed Mike to play 5 or 6 whole songs of mine, instead of only a couple of 45 second samples. Please tune into 95.9 WCRI at 7 PM this Sunday, or go to classical95.9.com from Monday the 10th on.

Here's a photo taken of Mike Maino and me just before the interview:

I was asked to talk about what had inspired me to pursue this profession. While it certainly helps having come from a musical family, the music itself is really what has always been the driving force behind every song and every album I've ever created and released.

I don't usually set out to write a song, although many recommend working at it daily. More often, I will begin to feel the need to express an idea, or I may find myself "haunted" by a certain progression or motif. Sometimes a song starts with the lyrics, and sometimes with music -- I find they are equally valid ways to arrive at a song.

Other songwriters, authors, and artists will know exactly what I mean when I say that creation is very much a birthing process. No matter what else you are doing, whenever a new idea is working on you (and not the other way around!), it lurks in your consciousness, waiting to achieve expression.

Cheers until next month!

I attach a photo my husband Ollie took of me during the interview:

The song was Spectrum, first featured on Spectator of the Spectrum & Volume 8 of the Digital Mystery Tour series, and then later as a hidden track on my debut CD, Touch of Magic, in 1998.

Thus began a twenty-five year collaboration, as Tony soon became my engineer, co-producer and a good friend, helping to shape the course of my musical career. During that time I've followed him through several moves: from North Providence to Pontiac Mills, and then from Pawtucket to Warren, as Atonal became Triad Recording Complex, and most recently, Triad-Normandy.

With each successive project, we have fine-tuned the editing process, and Jon Patrick Brennan joined the creative team for 2014 release Illumination, which many people are saying is my best album to date.

Here are a photo of Tony and me in 1998 at Pontiac Mills in Warwick and one of me in Pawtucket in 2011. The work continues; I have a few more projects in mind. So please stay tuned!

It suddenly dawned on me that this quartet represents four generations of music making at the keys, two of whom have passed on, with the other two still at it.

My paternal grandmother Jeanne Dvorzon taught piano for over 70 years, and I remember my dad Bernie Tieger -- a jazz drummer when I was young, and later a Sociology professor -- occasionally still sitting down to play blues or boogie on the piano. I myself have composed and taught piano since my teens, performing my original music since the early 90s, and my son Jon Patrick Brennan is a composer/arranger who performs primarily on keyboard with his girlfriend Sara Bartel. In this photo he had only just begun to play guitar, which later led to the formation of Shryne and his current musical adventures.
karitieger.comtag:karitieger.com,2005:Post/59881492014-05-30T20:00:00-04:002023-04-18T13:09:57-04:00Mediator Open Mic, Thursday May 29th, 2014
This past Thursday, I went down to see Kevin Lucas perform his first feature at the Mediator and pulled out some older Kari Tieger tunes for the Open Mic, not wanting to duplicate songs I'd played there in April, nor any the band and I will be playing at our upcoming feature in July.

Longtime fans of KT music will recognize the titles Green Eyes, Tu demeures dans mon coeur, and Just a Nate, as all 3 were on my 1998 debut album, Touch of Magic.

I debated whether to play the funky old upright or the grand, but was persuaded
